316L stainless steel pipe sometimes referred to as A4 stainless steel or marine grade stainless steel, is the second most common austenitic stainless steel pipe after 304/A2 stainless steel. Its primary alloying constituents after iron, are chromium (between 16–18%), nickel (10–12%), and molybdenum (2–3%), with small (<1%) quantities of silicon, phosphorus & sulfur also present. The addition of molybdenum provides greater corrosion resistance than 304, with respect to localized corrosive attack by chlorides and to general corrosion by reducing acids, such as sulfuric acid. 316L grade is the low carbon version of 316 stainless steel. When cold worked, 316 can produce high yield and tensile strengths similar to Duplex stainless grades. It is commonly used in the chemical and petrochemical industry, in food processing, pharmaceutical equipment, medical devices, potable water, wastewater treatment, marine applications, and architectural applications near the seashore or in urban areas.

1. Excellent corrosion resistance:

It performs well in various corrosive media such as organic acids, inorganic acids, alkalis, and salts, especially has excellent resistance to chloride corrosion, so it is often used in marine environments and pipelines and equipment for transporting corrosive media in the chemical industry.

Compared with 304 stainless steel, it has better corrosion resistance, which can also be reflected in the pulp and paper production process, and can also resist the erosion of the ocean and corrosive industrial atmosphere.

 

2. Good heat resistance:

316L stainless steel pipe has good oxidation resistance when used intermittently below 1600 degrees and continuously below 1700 degrees.

It is not recommended to use it continuously within the range of 800-1575 degrees, but it still has good heat resistance when used continuously outside this temperature range.

Its resistance to carbide precipitation is better than 316 stainless steel and can adapt to the above temperature range.

 

3. Excellent welding performance: It is suitable for all standard welding methods. When welding, 316CB, 316L or 309CB stainless steel filler rods or welding rods can be used for welding according to specific uses. In addition, if 316L stainless steel is used, no post-weld annealing is required after welding.

 

4. Moderate mechanical properties: It has certain strength and hardness, good toughness and ductility, and is light in weight when the bending and torsional strengths are the same, so it is widely used in the manufacture of mechanical parts and engineering structures, and is also often used to produce various conventional weapons, gun barrels, shells, etc.

 

5. Good work hardening: It has weak magnetism after processing.

 

6. It is non-magnetic in the solid solution state.
